Welcome to my site! I am Dinesh Gunawardena, currently following “Advanced Diploma in GIS” program at the Selkirk College, Castlegar BC, Canada.
I have had an interest for rocks and gemstones since I was a child. Hence, I started my career related to gems with the National Gem & Jewellery Authority in Sri Lanka. To further strengthen my knowledge about this field, I have followed two years Certificate course in Gemology from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. In the meantime, I have started a small business for buying gemstones directly from mines and selling to customers as a small retailer in Sri Lanka. It helped me to identify high quality gemstones, their defects and of course the value, and to understand customer requirements as well. Today I take that experience as an added value to my GIS career.
Once I moved to Canada, I had a chance to expose to new fields and I have selected to study GIS. First, I have completed a “GIS Data Management Certificate of Achievement” at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), Calgary, Alberta. It gave me an interest to step into this GIS world and enroll as a full time student at the Selkirk collage. During last two semesters, I have learned vast array of GIS applications through my lab assignments and individual projects. Remote sensing is one of the favorite subjects I have completed. I have done digital image processing and LiDAR data processing, and was experienced these emerging technologies. Flying drones would be another skill I have gained here. The GPS technology teaches me what the difference between code measurement vs phase measurement is. The cartography and geo-visualization skills help me to produce better cartographic outputs. the exposure to Adobe suite is an amazing tool for enhancing map output. The Adobe Plugin for ArcGIS would be very useful tool for real item map updating. I have also learned ArcGIS Online, Arc Server and Story maps, Python programming language and data base management systems from this program.
With these course contents, I have gained hands on experience with ESRI products, ArcGIS Online, Arc Server, ENVI, Adobe Suite, FME, QGIS, AutoCAD, SQL database management and Python. I am good at using mobile apps for field data collection together with mapping grade Trimble equipment.
